Types of Contact Lenses


Gone are the days where one would wear spectacles, now the time is changed and most of them are opting contact lenses for daily use. Term it as a fashion avowal or trouble-free wear that corrects the eye sight, everyone from teens to adults love wearing contact lenses. Also various colored lenses are offered in the market where the user is allowed to put-on the lenses according to his wish. There are lenses that are designed only for day time, some during night and few of them like extended wear, allow the user to stay till entire month without any need to change. These contact lenses are curved synthetic discs that are developed to wrap the cornea by adhering to the layer of tears. More than 24 million people in USA are using contact lenses.


Broadly contact lenses are of two kinds. They are namely soft lenses and rigid gas permeable lenses.  


Soft contact lenses: As the name suggest these lenses are soft and contain flexible synthetics that permit oxygen to pass by the cornea. Most of the soft contact lenses offer Ultra violet ray protection and are very comfy kind of nature that is best for eyes and have less chances of getting infected. The present day soft lens substances consist of silicone-hydro gel that offer a good supply of oxygen to the eyes.  There are Disposable Contact Lenses and non-disposable soft lenses that can be put-on a yearly plan. There are some drawbacks such as they take in pollutants from air, soap, lotions that can annoy your eyes. These lenses have high chances of being broken if proper care is not taken. 


Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses: These lenses are rigid when compared to soft lenses and are durable. They give the user a perfect vision since they are defiant to deposit build up. They can be used for a longer period of time when compared with the soft lenses. These are made of silicone polymers that allow a good supply of oxygen to be circulated through the cornea. The only draw back of rigid permeable glasses is that it takes much time for them to get adjusted. So wearing them regularly will make the user feel comfortable. 


Extended wear Contact Lenses: For the ones, who get annoyed with the regular wear and tear of lenses can opt for the Extended wear contact lenses. These lenses are good for continuous wear either for a week or they can also be extended to a time period of a month. These are generally soft lenses that allow oxygen to pass through the cornea giving you perfect vision. It is imperative to give your eyes rest at least one night after the removal of the lenses.  


Disposable Contact Lenses: These are the kind of lenses that can be used either once or for a period of month and can be disposed. These kinds of lenses are good for eyes, since every time there would be change and that is very important for healthy eyes. The amounts of protein, calcium present in the eyes make the Contact Lenses unclean and irritating. Of course these can be cleaned with the help of solution, but even though it is not cent percent effective. 


Certain contact lenses are entirely designed only for vision correction purpose. They are Orthokeratology and Decorative contact lenses. 


Orthokeratology Lenses: These use specifically designed rigid glass permeable lenses that change the cornea curvature for temporary correction of the vision. It is mostly used in correcting the myopia.  These lenses are available for the day wear and night wear. It is important to note that the vision adjustment is on a temporary basis. They should be used regularly and in case if discontinued will result to the original status of the eyes. 


Decorative Contact Lenses: These kinds of lenses are used by the youth, working professionals. They don’t correct the vision but can change the color of the eye on a temporary basis. These are also called as non-corrective lenses, Plano lenses. They can be used especially at the time of events, night parties, festivals etc. one would look fashionable with decorative contact lenses and become center of attraction. 


Contact lenses must be protected with utmost care and attention. They have to be rinsed in the solution before and after the usage. Doctor’s advice must be followed strictly for healthy eyes.
